Wondering if anyone uses ST3 to run their light show, how they do it, and what their rigs look like.
My band currently uses ST3 on an iPad to run our backing tracks/click. Right now, we just use "dumb" lights, but we want to start building a coordinated light show. Ideally, we'd like to continue using ST3 to run the show, and integrate the lights.
My idea to make this work:
Programming - Program the light show in Ableton via midi commands alongside our backing track files.
Recording - Record the show for each track to ST3 by setting up a usb midi interface with both midi in/out between the iPad and my PC. Have ST3 act as a remote control for Ableton to sync the show, and have ST3 record the incoming midi commands from Ableton.
Live Application - Plug the iPad into a docking station with power delivery, 3.5mm jack, and usb c ports. Use a USB midi interface to send midi signals to a simple DMX board like the Chauvette Obey 40. Voila, we'll have our show.
Do you think this will work? Any potential pitfalls? If the band gets off-click (it occasionally happens) is there a way to build-in a "kill switch" so the lights go into a basic holding pattern?
Sorry, if this is all relatively basic. Just trying to figure it out, and learn how to do this. I'd appreciate any input from more experienced users!
TLDR: If you run DMX through ST3, how do you do it?
