ST3 5.6 Full Backup not working

Hi Peter, when I create a full backup all goes well till the end all I get is a white pop up screen without any options to where I want to save the full backup file, it just sits there even while waiting for possible delay of the options popping up, I tried rebooting the iPad with no luck I deleted all my previous backups to save space, now I’m stuck as none of my other devices have this latest backup as I use this iPad as my master device, I have transferred all the beta looped songs I have already created during the test process, so now I am screwed if I can’t make this full backup as it will be my master for my other devices.
Am I the first one to report this ?

I have just done a database backup and that worked as usual.

OK , I’ve just tried to do the exact same full backup, absolutely nothing changed and this time the options to save have popped up on the previous blank white screen, so basically it’s a mystery to what has occurred it seems the database save has fixed the full backup process .

So please ignore but keep in mind it has occurred and I will report if it happens again.

Damir Just to let you know I get this same problem quite regularly when trying to back up my iPad. The only way I cure it is to power/on my device and keep trying - then the backup suddenly works!

DickyDutch thats good to know as this is the first full backup i attempted after the 5.6 upgrade as i leave my backups till i feel i have made big enough changes to my system.
I did the reboot the ipad thing but it still didnt work immediately on the full backup but it did work on database backup, and immediately after that the full backup worked as well, now this might be coincidance but with time i might be able to give more accurate feedback.

The screen is basically the box you get to choose to where you want to save the backup except it has nothing in it , its blank, and i cant reproduce it again it recovered itsef after i did a database sucessfully , after that the full backup workrd as well, it did this with about 3 attempts innitially then i rebooted the ipad than it still did it once again thats when i tried the database backup and it worked after that.

I’d like to mention that for me this problem didn’t just occur with 3,6 it was there also with 3.5. The white screen is the one that should show the list of possible folder locations for saving the backup. What happens is that a temporary spinning icon appears top left of screen but then the screen remains blank (white). Sometimes an error message pops up but disappears so fast it’s impossible to read! I often have to try several times to get the full backup function to work. - but I’ve never had a problem with database only backups - it appears to be related to file size.

Could it be that this only happens when the last location you had opened in the file selector was a cloud drive? Maybe the file selector tries to read the contents of the cloud drive and this maybe takes time.

How big is the backup when this problem happens?

peter my backup is around 5 to 6 gig

peter Hi will try to email a link to video of what often happens when I try to do a backup. The only cure for me is to power off/on the iPad and try again.

DickyDutch my backup is 21gb
I don’t use iCloud for this backup as it’s too large.But that sounds a possibility and because the database is small it brings up the choice where to save and once you choose on my device it then uses that as the default and works on full backup next time because it has space, perhaps the default should be always my device and let us choose other options and if the device is short of space a message of not enough space comes up.

NO problems with me full backup today and transferred to second ipad works perfect

I strongly suspect this is related to cloud services or servers connected in the Files app. I also don't see the problem on my end but I have only iCloud in use.

peter is there anything I can do to correct this or test your theory? I’m having difficulty in uploading the video I made because of file size - but will keep trying!

Do you use any cloud hoster beside iCloud?

Video upload to the forum is disabled due to size constraints I have on the server. You could share it through iCloud or Dropbox and send the download link to my email.

Ah yes, I know that error. It is caused by Dropbox. I would delete and reinstall the Dropbox app. That should take care of it.

DickyDutch I’ve now removed a Dropbox from my device and STAGETRAXX full backup now appears to be working as it should.
