  • Sending Midi from IPad direct to windows laptop

Hello, I am needing to send MIDI direct from my iPad into my windows PC. I tried plugging direct usb, and it’s not seeing my iPad as a midi device. Could someone advise what device is needed to reliably send midi from the iPad to my windows PC, without using Bluetooth? I want it to be a wired solution. Thank you!!

Use 2 midi interfaces. One connected to the iPad and one to the PC.

Lishy I am leery of using a wireless solution, I feel like a wired solution will be more consistent and reliable. Do you have a solid Bluetooth setup you’d recommend?

kwilliamaudio I’ve used 2 CME widi masters and a Widi Jack to send midi from our iPads to 3 devices on stage for years without any issue.
They do a usb Bluetooth dongle called the widi bud pro which would probably be the best for your setup.

Lishy cool, I ordered the widi pro, will give it a try. Thank you for the recommendation

kwilliamaudio You need two interfaces. One to connect to the iPad and another to connect to the PC.

He could just get the CME H2 midi pro which has usb and midi ins/outs.

Are you sure about that? It seems to have only one upstream connection to a computer or tablet. Not to both. The second midi port is a host port. That can not be used as a upstream port as far as I know.

I've also gone down the CME route for MIDI connections to my band's devices on stage.
I did originally choose the WIDI Bud Pro for my iPad, but I ran into one problem - when using a Lightning to USB 3 adapter so that I could plug in USB-A AND the lightning power connector, the WIDI Bud Pro is VERY wide and when sitting in the USB-A port, I could not have even the narrowest LIghtning cable plugged into the power port. Most adaptors are either laid out as USB-A next to Lightning, or a 3 port adapter as USB-A then Lightning in the middle, then another USB-A. But, I have seen one that was laid out as USB-A, USB-A, lightning, which would work as I could use the 2 outside ports.

That said, I ended up replacing the WIDI Bud Pro with the H4MIDI WC (https://www.cme-pro.com/h4midi-wc-usb-host-midi-interface/) + WIDI Core (https://www.cme-pro.com/widi-core/). That way I could connect both wireless devices AND wired devices. It also meant that one of the downstream devices (a Roland SPD-SX PRO drum sampler pad with a WIDI Master) could send triggers back to ST3 on the iPad for Song Start/Stop.

Wanted to share my experience: My goal was to create fully automated light shows for my band via software called light jams recorder, which records DMX data into small video files, which I then load into light jams light control software. From there, I can trigger specific DMX “recordings” from stage Traxx upon pressing the play button. We use a click track for every song built into the backing track, and since I used the backing tracks as the reference while recording the light scenes with a GrandMA console, as soon as I hit play, it (wirelessly, thanks for the recommendation lishy) fires the corresponding dmx recording and I have a fully automated light scenes for my entire set!!! So far it works flawlessly!! Thank you Peter for this amazing app that has been a game changer for my business!!!
