Host & Join Session issue
Adhoc networks never work reliably on a gig. Bring your own router with your own wifi network.

Lishy Thanks Lishy, i dont believe is an issue with the connectivity its just not staying connected, it to me feels like the software purposelly disconnects , similar to when your earbuds come out of your ear a bit and then the sensors turn off the audio, perhaps there is a setting if no transmission is happening for a while it shuts down the connection, it does not feel like a bad bluetooth connection , i have played bluetooth music to devices much further without any problems, its something to do with ST3 and its way it stays connected in a session, it seems to disconnect when not in use for a while.

Further testing at home with both ipads on a router and bluetooth on, side by side, i play on the host the slave responds ok then i mix a few times through my songs and presto a disconnection , here is the message
This to me is a bug and not a poor connection, the host is diconnecting the session for some reason .
Hope this can be fixed as it makes the feature unusable.
Another interesting thing happens, as i have both ipads absolutely identical , when this disconnection occurs my slave still plays this song using the song that was on my host but now its playing this same song on the slave and i have to hit stop on the slave, as far as i know the onboard songs have nothing to do with the songs on my host unless i choose to display that same song using my own version on the slave, i have not selected show local lyrics on the slave, and why is that same song playing on my slave ipad? It should not be playing anything and it should only show lyrics off the slave if i turn on show local lyrics, everything seems on the nose in this area which i havent used much at all previously.
Good luck with it Peter.
Believe me, it is a poor connection. Use a proper wifi network and you will see no issues.
peter Peter I am sitting near the router the wifi connection is rock solid I can walk down the street and still have a solid connection , both devices are on the same router and in very close proximity so even Bluetooth should easily be rock solid, but there is something thats disconnecting the connection , what that is I don’t know , all I know I never had such an unreliable connection before so something has changed my router is top of the range available in australia and it has not given me any connection problems to any of my wireless devices , it’s only when I use two iPads either using it through my home router or on stage without any router , it still disconnects within a few minutes of use , perhaps this is a new issue with latest updates I don’t know but my connection between the two devices was a lot more usable before than it is now, and going through a good signal router does not seem to matter, it’s the devices that seem to not want to work together solidly , perhaps some settings combination is causing this but I definitely can guarantee it is not a poor signal.
I have now taken my two iPads to my workplace where I always use these devices through the works router which is located in the ceiling above my head and feeds a huge area of the building , same thing happens and I get the same message.
The devices are on a table 1 meter apart and the router is about 3 meters away signal strength is 100% Bluetooth should be no problem as distance is not an issue and there is no other interference from any other devices, yet I would be better off using a piece of string and 2 plastic cups.

The disconnection between the devices happens every 30 seconds
Why is my song of the same name playing without sound on my slave and keeps playing when the connection is lost, the lyrics keep scroling yet there is no connection to the host ?
Its like the host triggers play of the same song name in the slave and scrolls the lyrics using the slaves lyrics and uses the sync of the host untill it looses connection 30 seconds later every time and continues with its own song till the end displaying lyrics yet no sound is present on output.
Also why am i able to play a song on the slave and hear it yet i have joined the host and want to be controlled by the host, in this mode there should be no capability to play on the slave till the slave is released from the host? This to me is another issue, possibly an oversight.
When i join to a host i expect the host to fully take over and only allow local lyrics to show on slave if there are any present of the identical name, if not then its the hosts lyrics that should be shown.
If i turn off show local lyrics then its only the hosts lyrics that will show and i will loose any play control on the slave untill the slave is diconnected.
At the moment there are funny things happening but whats most important is to have a rock solid connection, but i am finding there is an issue with this where every 30 seconds my slave gets disconnected for some unknown reason, this is a bug.

Interesting find, i tried to swap host to slave between 3 devices on the same wifi connection.
Ipad pro
Ipad 9th gen
Iphone 11 pro max
Only One combination worked properly, if i used my ipad 9th gen as host to my ipad pro as a slave i could walk around the huge ABC first floor and the connection was solid.
All other combinations i get the same message i already posted after 30 seconds.
If i used iphone as host to ipad pro still a problem to my ipad 9th gen again a problem , ipad pro as a host did not work to any of the other two, the only sucess was ipad 9th gen to ipad pro but still it was failing to keep connection to iphone after 30 seconds,
So something is FT up with the Apple system and ST3.
Life was not meant to be easy

I dont have any trouble wirelesly transferring large data files between all my devices so it cant be a signal strength issue as i would always have trouble with transfers so it must be a programming issue of how the devices talkto each other when using ST3. could it be a permissions thing im
I have been having the same problem.
I understand the idea of both using the same network. However, can anyone recommend a network router for use at a gig. Does it need a sim card to connect to the internet?

peter Good News!
I just updated all my devices to the new 17.5 operating system and the Host session connection problem went away, it must have been one of the fixes apple has done,
Now I can host from any device to other devices and no disconnection occurs even if I walk down the street as my router has lots of power, now this is what I expected how it should work.
It will be interesting to see it on stage without a router but I believe it will be fine as the distances are very minimal on stage.
So a note to everyone experiencing regular disconnections of host/slave update to OS 17.5.
Thanks guys
There are still some issues I am finding when using host even with a good connection.
If I setup my host and my slaves I expect if I shut down my host ST3 and then fire it up again it should automatically reconnect to the slaves if I have chosen a device to be the host or a slave , in other words if I have all devices setup on the router and no wifi connection was broken but I have shut down the ST3 on any device I expect when I open ST3 again the slave to host setting should be automatically established as nothing has changed now we have to go to settings and reconnect, I expect for this to be , if I don’t want a connection I go to settings and disconnect this connection manually or I completely disconnect from the main router and my next gig I have to create the new setup , but as long as I stay on that router my settings will automatically establish themselves if I exit ST3 and come back as the router still has all devices connected and I expect ST3 to assume I am still on stage and want to establish my host and slaves , unless I go to settings and change these settings.
When I go home everything goes back to the way it is now everything is disconnected and ready for next gig preferences to be set.
Now we have to repeat ourselves regularly if we disconnect for any reason it’s an unnecessary pain.

peter i agree with you, if i was using host with a band most definitely , but i do solo work with occasional unexpected need to setup a host / slave i found in the earlier versions of software and operating system this was stable enough on a small stage , but lately as i wanted this it was not working at all due to the automatic disconnection every 30 secconds as i was thoroughly investigating this problem apple provided a new update which now has fixed this unusual problem so now my next gig tomorrow i will setup a slave again and give it another try to see if it works as expected without a router.
Thanks again
You seem to now need anoutbound internet connection for it to work. A closed network of devices via a stage router will time out. It is as if it is trying to reach back home but cant and fails disconnecting the session.
A fix we found was to use a MI-FI network so all devices can get to the internet. Once we switched over it has been working but a pain in the ass cause cellular is sometimes spotty.
Last night gig I tested the updated software without a router and had not one issue it appeared rock solid all night using my iPad Pro as host and iPad 9th gen as slave this prior to the latest OS did not work at all NOW IT WORKS let’s hope it stays that way.
Damir I had the same issue going from my MacBook Pro to an iPad (no dedicated router). Just a host (MacBook) and one slave (iPad) but it did the same thing you experienced. Dropped the signal to the slave but the song kept scrolling on the slave despite the dropped connection. I don't think the OS on the iPad is up-to-date so I'll give it a try. To Peter's point, it seems a dedicated router is the fail-safe.
For those of you performing live with other wireless connections... are you running a dedicated router specifically for ST3 and then another router for digital mixers, FOH and IEMs? Or is everything connecting via a single router and LAN network?
