  • Questions regarding regions and assignments

Hello and best wishes to everyone for 2024, with lots of music and use of @peter 's great app!

I have questions regarding regions and assignments:

  1. "Start/Stop" function: During a loop, I would like it if when I press to pause and when I press again to restart the song, it restarts at the start of the loop (like on the beatBuddy by example) so as to be sure that I am on the first beat of the measure. Would this be possible?
  2. "Select next audio region" function: When I press, it remains on the current region and I have to wait for one more passage in the current region to move on to the next one, or else press it twice which is not practical during singing. If there is a usefulness for some to this last transition of region before the next with this function, can we not add an additional function "Jump to next audio region" which would pass to this new region directly to the end of the current region without making an additional turn?

Thank you so much,
Olivier.

  1. There is only a stop option that rewinds to the start of the song. You will need to tap on the region you want to start playing once to move the song pointer to the start of that region.

  2. The reasoning behind the current logic is that you can use the first tap to repeat the current region just once.

peter I like Oliver’s thinking , you can always engage the permanent loop feature if you want a repeat but a sudden pause and then continue with the next loop from the beginning is a lot more helpful

But he is asking to pause and continue from the beginning of the current loop.

      Thank you for your answers.
What seems important to me when you start again after the break is above all to start at the beginning of the loop to be sure to be on the first beat of the measure (this can be the current loop or the next one, I I'm sure I'm on the first beat of the measure). I will therefore adapt without problem, but currently this is not the case and the recovery is uncertain for me...)

And regarding the "Select next audio region" function, I understand the logic stated Peter but is it not possible then to add a "Jump to next audio region" function which would jump to this new region directly at the end of the current region without making an additional turn?
      Thanks

When your region starts on a beat and you tap on it while playback is stopped, the playhead will move to the start of the region. When you press play, the playback will start on the beat.

I understand that Peter but I would just like if I don't change region when pausing, it restarts at the start of the current loop automatically by pressing play to restart on the first beat.

peter perhaps an option to do all four in song detail settings, edit audio region's, so you can choose which behaviour suits a particular song, just like permanent loop selecting a segment , if stop/pause is pressed these options are available
1 no effect just a pause
2 auto cue to beginning of this loop
3 auto cue to the previous loop
4 auto cue to the next loop

In general settings, playback settings perhaps a default setting if you want all songs to default to a certain behaviour but in song detail mode the options override the default setting so you can Taylor your needs.

One thing, Lyrics to remain until a start is pressed again.

This way you can be sure you can stop and involve the crowd and when you hit start you have a choice to pre program your auto jump to suit this particular song without also tap dancing on stage..
At the moment I just use my finger on the iPad screen as it’s the fastest way , but it’s not very practical, stepping through loops is ok if you have time but some songs are too fast to do this effectively and using the finger drops down the screen on occasion so it makes things worse or I should say stressful.

But generally I’m LOVIN THE LOOPS👍
I’m even starting to loop all my DJ must play songs in the library so I can jump around where and whenever I want to suit the moment , it is the greatest new development in a song player without having to be a DJ genius.

And regarding the "Select next audio region" function, I understand the logic stated Peter but is it not possible then to add a "Jump to next audio region" function which would jump to this new region directly at the end of the current region without making an additional turn?

Almost anything is possible but the app needs to still be usable. It is already too complex the way it is and at this point where the manual is already too long for most users to read, I will not add additional usage options until I find a way to reduce complexity even if that means that you might have to tap a button twice instead once.

            peter
OK Peter I will adapt but I must say that for me when there is a function to move to the next region, it is precisely to move there when you press the button. If I want it to play an extra loop I let it run one more turn before pressing.
I suppose there must be some point in this doing one more round like it does now but I don't see it. It doesn't matter, I will actually press twice in this case.
            Thanks again for the answers
            Olivier

peter I totally agree , but I rather have these sort of options than ones that I will probably never use as I am a solo performer not a band that requires all sorts of different needs which actually complicate the software greatly, I guess there’s a point where you have to ask yourself who am I aiming this software fore and specialise in that logic as you can’t please everyone, I think there are a lot more small type users than pro bands out there.

Olivier I understand that Peter but I would just like if I don't change region when pausing, it restarts at the start of the current loop automatically by pressing play to restart on the first beat.

I totally know what you are asking for as sometimes the moment is perfect for a total break and crowd involvement , the problem with just a PAUSE it does nothing to help you rejoin a good spot to get back to the backing track , it actually makes you work hard to select a begining of a new loop while you are totally focused on the crowd, a good device logic is to make it totaly easy to get back in time without any extra button pushes as its hard enough to prejudge a good start point due to time lag of when you press the start button but on top of that you are sweating choosing the appropriate start point, this is a trick only some good devices have mastered , give it a bit more time and you will see software that will do this easily its just no one has taken on these challenges as they havent been in our shoes.
But at least we have audio segments which is something i wanted when audio went digital but no one rhought of it or it couldn be done for some technical reason.
So fingers x we get all we want eventually im close to retirement so it probably wont be in my time 🤪

@peter 's app is really awesome. It lacks very few features so that it can also be used like the "BeatBuddy" for example which only plays loops by chaining them together with a simple click of the foot. Peter's application allows you to place these samples in each of the associated regions. In my opinion, clicking on the skip to the next region should make the region change at the end of the current loop and not with an additional pass (like the beatBuddy), and when you pause and restart, it should restart at the start of the current loop (like beatbuddy too). This allows much simpler live management for pieces of music where you have not programmed the arrangement of the entire title but where you have to chain samples with for example a kick, then kick + snare, then kick + clap etc...

Olivier yes I totally see your logic and that’s why The beat buddy is so useful as a backing drum machine, unfortunately ST3 is not designed from that perspective as it also is a full audio backing and lyrics capability which it has to consider , this makes it a lot harder to get perfect as everyone is pulling in different directions and no one is getting everything, I believe ST3 has the potential to become perfect for all if its designed with all in mind , using it as a drum machine is just one option,
As a lyrics only device like an auto cue or a simple text buddy is another , a multi-tracker playback device with synced lyrics, a basic stereo player with lyrics and so on, perhaps a simple choice in settings to choose which method suits you and the logic changes slightly to perfect the operation of what you are using it for and everything then is focused on this use and keeps the app simple.
I am just throwing ideas out there for future ST development, I know lots of people just want a simple beat box that just works easily on stage ST3 is almost perfect for this and you could even have lyrics with it , but it needs a slightly different logic to beat the beat buddy or box or a drum machine. Its so close yet so far it’s frustrating I know how you feel as I waited for this software for a long time and did not think I would ever see it in my life time.
