ST3 sending MIDI to laptop to control video playback (in Resolume)

Hi everyone. Thanks to this community’s help we’re flying along in our ST improvements as a band. Thank you.

Next step is that we’d like to trigger video playback from ST3 using a laptop running Resolume. I have read through the manual and watched Scott’s YouTube tutorial but can’t quite figure it out to our needs. PREVIOISLY we do this from the SPDSX, which send a midi note straight to the laptop which triggers the video playback.

How do I accomplish this in ST3, running from an iPad, please? I gather we need a midi interface (recommendations welcome), and prefer to run a wired connection to the laptop. Please could someone advise:
(A) what hardware/cables I need between the usb c out of the iPad and the usb a in of the laptop
(B) how I set up the midi note send, different note per song, and always at 00:00.000

SBB If both devices are in the same WiFi network, you could connect to the Stage Traxx network midi session that it automatically creates when ST3 is running from your MacBook. Here is a description how to do that: https://stagecue.app/user-guide/settings/#network-midi-sessions-ios-only

Regarding the midi commands, @AnthonyB posted a link to the midi documentation and there are examples there.

You'll need to have a lyric for deck and and pop a timestamped MIDI command in as per above docs.

AnthonyB hmmm I read that but could get to grips with it, maybe because I’m quite visual so without having it all hooked up I can’t ‘See’ it in my mind’s eye to understand. Thanks.

For the first question, I'm a big fan of the CME Pro MIDI gear. You're only talking about controlling 1 device right now via MIDI, but what is the future possibilities? I love (and use as my main live setup MIDI interface} the CME H4MIDI WC as it has all the USB and 5-pin DIN in and outs to do want you want now, and expand further down the track.
CME also provide great support and have a very active FB Group that they participate in.

AnthonyB thank you. We’re definitely looking into using midi to control pedals/emulators etc so future proofing is a good idea, and that hardware looks really well priced.

So for my simple brain, I’d connect the iPad usb c to h4midi usb a, then h4midi usb c to the laptop usb a to control Resolume?
This would then also give the option to expand to 2 further midi controlled devices (either midi cables or Bluetooth adapters) in the future if we wish. Do I understand that correctly?

peter thanks Peter. The laptop we run the videos from is Windows, running Resolume, rather than a MacBook running StageCue so Im guessing this wouldn’t work to connect the iPad to the laptop?

A bit of a side question - are you sure Resolume is the right solution for you? It is pretty complex software.

It sounds like you have a collection of videos, and are just triggering a single video at the start of each song?
If that is the case, Resolume seems like massive overkill and I would genuinely look at something much simpler that meets your needs, like Stage Cue (https://stagecue.app/).
I also trigger a video at the start of each song and I just have another iPad running Stage Cue, loaded up with the videos, plugged into the HDMI adapter of a screen/projector. StageCue is very simple, but if this is your use-case, you'll find it much easier to get up and running with.

As Peter mentioned above, if your devices running Stage Cue and Stage Traxx are on the same WiFi network, they can communicate directly via a Networked MIDI session.
So in SC, you just assign a MIDI trigger for each video to start playback (https://stagecue.app/user-guide/video-settings/).
Then in ST, you just send that MIDI event as a timestamped MIDI event in your lyric sheet (https://stagetraxx.com/user-guide/midi/) for that song.

Here's an example of one of mine.

In SC, the Video for SongA has MIDI trigger for Start / Stop set to N3.127@12 (Note3 with a velocity of 127 on MIDI Channel 12)
In ST, in the lyric sheet for SongA I have [midi@00:00.100: N3.127@12]

For overall housekeeping, I also have a Global Stop video playback configured in SC (https://stagecue.app/user-guide/settings/#stop-playback) of N0.0@12 and in ST I have a global Send MIDI Stop command configured (https://stagetraxx.com/user-guide/settings/#send-midi) of same, N0.0@12

You can also make this work on Windows. Google for RTPMIDI. The network midi session is compatible with this protocol so that you can connect to it from Windows with an RTPMIDI client.
