hello peter, on some forums I have already read about dmx controls. I would like to control my lights via midi. I don't have a dmx controller yet. what sugestions do you have for this.

DMX via MIDI
tommynoels I am doing this with a self made interface using a couple of arduinos converting midi to DMX.
I use a Yamaha BluetoothLE MIDI interface plugged into a MiDI shield on one arduino, this talks in the same box to another arduino which has a DmX shield on it. I use embedded MIDI commands in the song converted in the software on the arduino to custom drive my lights.
it also controls a relay to switch a relay to switch my reverb on and off and, by talking to a third arduino, puts key strokes into my laptop running PowerPoint to provide graphics on a screen on the back of the stage.
sounds complicated but pretty easy.
Basically, a midi string in the lyric section of each song (or in the start/stop button midi string) switches my lights to a pattern between songs while switching my reverb off and as soon as my track starts another string switches my lights to a pattern fitting the song, my vocal reverb on, my background graphics change and even my guitar and keyboard to the right patches.
There is a little bit of fudging between the MiDI and DMX signals as MIDI has only 128 level options while DMX has 256 so I literally double the midi value.
if you are interested I can maybe send a cut down version of the arduino codes and a wiring diagram if you wanted to do your own.
If anyone is interested here is a link to a video showing my Arduino based MIDI-DMX interface box.
I'm sorry, I can't recommend any DMX controller. I have used QLC+ on a Raspberry Pi previously and that worked fine, but I have given up on DMX since. It simply takes too much time setting up. So now, I just use dumb lights in slow color cycle mode.
Maybe I will come back to this topic once battery powered lights with wireless DMX are affordable. I have seen the Apelights in action and I am deeply impressed, but I simply can't afford them.
wow, this is what i need. but I am not so handy to put this together myself. i was browsing the web a bit and found the following.the irig midi 2 interface. what do you think of this. i think its a litle like the box of beejaywh but i dont need to make it myself. with this i can send midi messages embedded in the lyrics to a dmx controller. not.

That interface should work fine. An alternative would be to use a bluetooth midi interface. That would not occupy your lightning port.
tommynoels unfortunately not Tommy. The iRid 2 is purely a midi interface but wired rather than Bluetooth. It’s equivalent to the Yamaha Bluetooth device I plug into my box. It does not output dmx just midi (I do also use one occasionally).
it is however, a very good midi interface and as Peter says, works well with ST.
unfortunately, apart from a few large and expensive lighting boards I’m not aware of anything on the market to do midi to DMX, certainly not sub $100
so if i connect a American DJ DMX Operator 384 DMX en MIDI controller, wit a Yamaha MD-BT01 DIN-MIDI Bluetooth LE adapter. then my lightning port is free. and i can conrol my lights by midi signals ?
for about 150 Euro.
Yes, if your DMX controller can understand the MIDI commands Stage Traxx can send.
ok, thanks guys. so it becomes the adj dmx controller, which meets the requirements for our gig.
only about the midi interface I don't know yet. do you have experience with the delay via the bluethoot conection, or is this not observable?. I would manage 2 things via bluethoot. my foot pedal and the midi interface.
I don’t notice any delays with the Yamaha Bluetooth adaptor.
keep the thread updated if you would re the ADJ controller please. Very interesting.
best of luck
what do you mean with, keep the thread updated ?
tommynoels just keep posting here to let us know how you get on. It’s interesting and may help someone else who has similar issues.
ahhh ok, I will keep you informed. in a few days i wil need your help again anyway.
To know how to use the midi code's in the lyrics.

I also gave up on DMX as setting the lights up added far too much time to a regular set up as well as extra equipment. I now use a range of lights plugged into wireless sockets, lights being set to auto.
Hey Beejaywh,
so i bought the adj controller and the yamaha md bt10. it turns out that the adj does not deliver fanthom power to the yamaha. do you know how many volts it needs to power. then I make a panthom power suply myself.

tommynoels yes, it appears that the ADJ does not have an output socket which is where the Yamaha gets it’s power from. Very simple. Get a 5 pin din socket and a 220 ohm resistor and connect pin 2 (the centre pin) to ground connect 5v to one side of the 220 ohm resistor and the other side of the resistor to pin 4 then plug the Yamaha output plug into that socket. I would actually power it off 3x AAA batteries in series which give 4.5v and not bother with a power supply. It’ll last ages like on those batteries.

Something like this ?
Looks spot on to me
