Unclear on connection Protocol

Hi
I’m a bit unclear on how ST3 hosts and connects to other iPads running ST3.
Most often the "slave" iPad recognizes and connects to the host iPad no problem.
On 2 recent occasions I have been unable to connect the two.

The workaround last gig was to connect both host and “slave” to an iPhone personal hotspot.
This worked fine, but I need to understand how ST3 connects.
Is the protocol only WIFI - or Bluetooth.. or both?

We gig all over the state… only the 2 issues so far.
Have I just been getting lucky at gigs and connecting to Xfinity hotspots?
Please help me understand.

CanalStreet1 connecting via Bluetooth is unreliable so best to use your own router. If you have a router and Bluetooth on, the router will take preference.

Connection via Bluetooth and adhoc networks no longer works since iOS 17.4. Always bring your own wifi router and connect all devices the same wifi network.

I can recommend an old used Airport Express 2. Small footprint, strong network, easy to configure and cheap.
