  • Setting Song Tempo via Midi - RCF M18 Mixer

Hi,
I'm looking for some help please on setting the tempo at the start of a song load so that the Tempo of my vocal delay will match the song.. I'm struggling to work through and think it might be something with the MSB/LSB i'm not sure.

As far as i can see the RCF midi implementation chart shows it's possible?

Could anyone please advise on how I can do this via a Midi message at the start of each song that would be amazing.

From the attached image of the RCF M18 chart; with the bpm of the song in this case 81bpm and the global midi channel that receives on is channel 10 in my case.
So I thought it might be [midi: CC31.81@10] but that's not working.

I've got the ST3 sending other messages to the mixer ok via channel 10 like 'Mute All FX and Note on messages.

Thank you in advance.

The big question is how to split the tempo to MSB and LSB values. LSB is the lower value. So maybe anything from 0 - 127 would just need the LSB part. And anything 128 and faster would need both MSB and LSB. Sending just the MSB like you did does normally not work.

So I would try to send just CC63.80@10 and see if that changes the tempo to 80.

If not, try to find any examples in the manual.

I have tried before to use some tempo "mapping'' to no avail.
I would just recommend using something (like a BT footswitch) that can send the specific midi tap tempo cc for your device
and in the beginning of every song just use that to tap the midi commands into the lyrics editor.
yes loads of time but once its done its done and it will be quite accurate. mid song tempo changes are also easily inserted as needed.

peter Hi Peter and thank you for your swift response.

Sadly that what you've suggested doesn't do anything.. I will try and see if i can find any other info about how to do this but sadly there's not much about on this Mixer and the manual and website of RCF is minimal.

I really appreciate your advice and I'll keep trying to learn and appreciate your great product. Thank you.

      Best wishes.

      Paul

PaulHand p.s I also wanted to ask, it doesn't matter where you put the midi message in the lyrics does it? As long as it's at the top. Just checking it's not getting missed like sometimes on old midi files?

        Thanks again.

Sharonzaz Hi and thank you for your comment and advice.

I have an Air Turn bluetooth board that i use to operate ST3.

Do you mean I should try and use this to connect to the mixer itself? As far as I can see the RCFM18 doesn't have anyway of doing this.. Or am i wrong? If you don't mind explaining a little i'm sorry.

          Thank you

            PaulHand

No, you connect the airturn to your device that runs ST3 and (if thats possible) set one of the buttons to send that specific CC that your mixer identifies as tap tempo for your delay.

in the lyrics editor you just tap that button 4-6 times (should be enough) and every song the tap tempo
on your mixer should be set to that tempo youve tapped.

i do that with my Helix, but when i load a new song i dont bother connecting the Helix, i used a similar pedal (iRig BlueBoard- that one can be set to whatever you want) and just tap a few times and thats that.

if your BT pedal cannot be set, you can just tap the tempo and then manually change the values as needed afterwards.

ST3 has a really great midi learn feature, and you could actually find out the actual value you're looking for by connecting your mixer to ST3 and pressing the midi learn on any function ST3 offers and then hit the tap button on your mixer (on the software app for it), ST3 should capture and reveal the value you're looking for. I did this to find out the mute for one on the channels on my QU-SB.
let us know if it worked 🙂

              Sharonzaz Hi Sharonzaz.

Thank you again for your kind support and time helping me.

My Airturn500 BT board can't connect to anything on my Mixers iPad UI.

However, i've just used the midi learn in the Lyric editor and pressed play.. Then hit the 'Tap Tempo' on the Metronome tab (not the initial 'tap tempo on the delay effects itself) which i was trying.

The Metronome 'Tap' function seems to create a MSB & then LSB CC value and records that in the Lyric editor. The problem i now have is that the Lyric Editor seems to crash as i can't Stop the Learn function and then come out of it to then save it.

              But some sort of progress...
Now i'm not sure if the CC message that is associated with the Metronome has any relation to the 'Effects Delay' which is what i want to set.. I'm hoping that it's a Global Tempo. But i'm not holding much hope yet.

I can try and upload a picture and a little video of what's happening.

              Thank you again.

not to the mixer, to ST3

use that to tap what you need and change the values to the right CC/PG/note number that your mixer can read

PaulHand I also wanted to ask, it doesn't matter where you put the midi message in the lyrics does it?

Midi commands can be anywhere in the lyrics as long as they are at the beginning of a line.

There is a stop button in the midi learn popup and that works for me just fine. It does not work for you?
