  • Song Play in ST3 triggers studio one playback at specific time

Just wondering if this is possible. I use ST3 for lyrics and studio one for the backing tracks. Thanks in advance!

JohnnySolo

JohnnySolo ST3 does both very well why use studio 1 it doesn't come close to ST3 for on stage use?

Hi Peter I chose the colour yellow to highlight my chords but for some reason not all of them are high lighting I would say half and half but there is no order to it they are all over and I don’t know how to remedy it can you please help cheers Joe

Damir Hahahaha - 1) live vocal effects are awesome and time based 2) way easier to mix the backing tracks and 3) recording live performance. So is there a “hot key” midi command in ST3?

@JohnnySolo If you can configure studio one to start playback with a midi command, then just send this midi command from ST3 when you start playback.

You are using a DAW on stage that is not designed for the job, it does not compare to ST3 , your best solution is contact Studio one designers and ask them to introduce your needs for on stage use.
          ST3 is a fantastic Player.
Studio One is a great DAW for studio work.
Use the right tool for the right job and you will find it much easier .
Can you use Studio one on an iphone or an ipad ?
Good luck with your search for a better way to perform.
          Cheers Damir.

Damir well that’s your opinion - it has worked fine for me. I’m just trying to optimize my workflow but I don’t think this functionality is currently available in ST3. No big deal, I will just control ST3 with Studio One like I have been doing. It works great most of the time, but for some reason the Bluetooth midi connection drops on occasion.

Check out studio one show page. It is pretty awesome too!

            Cheers, JohnnySolo

Hi Johnny, I have just checked out the new Studio one and wow it definitely has great power in actual fact they have lately introduced synced Lyrics that definitely look very nice to use and edit, don’t know if it’s as user friendly on stage though like ST3 , but for a DAW editor it seems to be loaded with very powerful tools , I am using Logic Pro but will give Studio One a try to see if it improves my backing track creation more efficient.I did have a look at it years ago and decided on Logic but it has definitely grown in to a DAW on steroids, my only other concern is can you buy it or is it prescription as I don’t use any prescription software, unless it washes my dishes and makes my bed.
ST3 still looks to be the easiest way to perform on stage , my dream program would be an all in one audio creator and a playback software but it’s not gonna happen in my lifetime.
Thanks for making me aware of Studio once again.
              Cheers Damir

I'm not sure about that as ST3 can send midi commands at specific times during playback. So just send whatever command you need to start/stop the playback in Studio One.

peter Hi Peter - thanks for that. While ST3 is playing, can ST3 send a midi command that starts the DAW at a specific midi time point in the DAW timeline? I’m thinking it’s a 2 step process, 1) move the play head marker to the time point in the DAW and then 2) “start” the DAW playback.

Enable MIDI clock in ST3. Studio One should be able to sync to midi clock and then it would always follow the playback position of ST3. ... at least in theory 😉

Making good progress Peter - thanks for all the help. I have ST3 controlling playback in studio one but even though I load a song with an off set each song starts at time zero. Now how do I get the time code offset to work for each song?

Uh, you found a bug. The offset setting is not added to the timecode. Seems like you are the first user using the timecode offset functionality.

I have fixed it already and will release it in version 3.7. It will also be available in the next update for the beta version.

Wow Peter - that’s super quick implementation! Kudos to you! Even though the time code offset isn’t working, it appears that the midi sync between studio one and ST3 isn’t very stable - lots of clicks and pops. I’m using Midimittr USB connection but perhaps there’s another midi interface that you would recommend? It’s better than the Bluetooth but any clicks and pops are obviously a bit of a problem!

                Cheers, JohnnySolo

MTC (midi time code) is very sensitive to signal jitter as it is sending a constant stream of midi messages. You could try using the 25fps setting to reduce the number of messages sent a little bit. If that does not help I would get rid of any additional apps in the midi stream like Midimittr. You would then need a midi interface that works with iOS and another midi interface on your computer. But I can't recommend anything specific as I am mostly using bluetooth midi which is not suited for MTC.

Hey Peter - I almost have this working the way I want. I’m sending the midi clock from my Line6 helix to studio one and I set the sync function in ST3 to clock and the sync seems very stable. The time code offset works perfectly and I can scroll through the song timeline in ST3 and that links perfectly with Studio One. I start playback in studio one with my line6 helix and the track automation starts ST3. All good except when the song ends. When the song stops in ST3 it causes my playback to stop in Studio One and the next song on the ST3 playlist auto loads but the time code offset is not sent to Studio One. See pic1. The issue only happens when Studio One playing. If I stop studio one before the ST3 song ends, the next song loads and the time code offset works perfectly. See pic2. There is a sysex message sent from ST3 that seems to stop the playback in studio one and not send the time code offset for the next song. Any ideas?

Alternatively, I wish I could get the load/play/stop send midi commands to work with studio one. What midi command is used to do this?

The Sysex messages are the midi timecode messages. So from a ST3 perspective I don't see a difference between both screenshots.

Understood - is there a way to send a midi "stop" command (i think this is an MMC message) to Studio One in the ST3 lyrics (towards the end of the song)? If so, what's the syntax?
