Inline Chords Not Recognized?

peter How do you suggest we add instructions and notes within the song? I’ve always done it on the chord line, such as ‘tacet’, ‘hold’, ‘sustain’ etc. and of course this mean none of the chords in these lines are in the correct colour.

I would say use PDFs if you need specific information and prompts , it might be quicker to create and display , the text editor is great for lyrics and chords , yes you can do little extra tricks but it’s not meant to be a complicated operating display system, I hate over programming my performances I like little mistakes and encourage them when performing with others that’s what makes the show interesting, I think keeping the lyrics and chord facility simple is much better for users , this applies to my lighting if it’s too programmed it’s boring.
You got backing audio with great control with looping you have lyrics and chords now get out there and add lib and have fun don’t program everything to the end degree, my biggest mistake 45 years ago I started writing down lyrics to help me just in case now I can’t remember any lyrics as I got lazy and that part of the brain degraded with time , so if you can try and remember things as much as you can for as long as possible specially if you are younger, use this technology very sparingly.
I can perform around 365 songs I need the lyrics for all of them I need the chords for half of them and I don’t need any instructions for anything else , i don’t need stage position instructions to accomodate the lighting show or Tv cameras as I don’t perform such large gigs.
ST3 is primarily designed towards small acts that want a big sound and freedom to perform without being fixed to a boring fixed system, too much automation creates robots on stage.

Place them in their own line and use coloring.

If these notes get really complicated, you might want to use a pdf file. This is actually what I do as I always prefer Realbook Style Leadsheets.

I like the text charts because I can transpose them quickly as needed. Plus I do a bit of MIDI programming for the Beat Buddy and my Gigboard. But you are correct about our brains getting lazy and becoming dependent on charts. I do try and memorize songs when I can but time is always a factor.

Damir The way you work doesn’t work for me, especially if you encourage mistakes. I have no interest in using PDFs. The instructions I include in my lyrics are rarely for my benefit but for people working with me, people who don’t do every gig with me and may forget specifics in between gigs. Peter has suggested a way in which I can make it work and that is good enough for me.

In worship music I see a lot of "2" chords like C2 and F2.

peter Thanks, Peter. This is very helpful. The 2 chord has become very popular in Christian music charts. The add9 and sus worked just fine.

Only a suggestion. Obviously keeping the colour highlighting/scrolling/transposing of being able to enter chords into the scrolling lyrics is far superior than the PDF or entering other coloured text lines that won't transpose.

Just throwing a randon idea out there. Would it be possible to have a table in the settings section that lets the user put their own custom chords in which populate the lyrics (I'm guessing there are heaps of conflicts with that idea -i.e. probably couldn't transpose - but that might be acceptible to some people who don't need to transpose but need the flexibilty of custom chords or voicings (i.e. D/F#bass). Considering that people who are forced to use PDFs don't have the flexibility of transposing, chord highlighting or line scrolling, it may offer them a little more flexibility (with the acceptable/knowledge that any custom chords entered in the User Defined Custom Chord section won't be transposed (but they will be highlighted and scrolled -basically just added as coloured text above the lyrics where entered using the brackets). Just a thought.

Does a m7sus4 even exist? A suspended chord is a chord in which the (major or minor) third is omitted and replaced with a perfect fourth or a major second. I guess you want to play the following notes (example C):

C Eb F G Bb

I would call this chord a Cm11

The custom chord extensions is an interesting idea but a single entry with an invalid syntax might easily break the whole chord hightlighting.

peter Hi Peter, thanks for responding.

The initial question was regarding Under The Milky Way which is xAEACE (the straight open minor) then x AEAD(the sus)G(or open E).

I incorrectly thought the underlying chord was on top of Am voicing (meaning a C should be present in the chord), however when the sus4 (the D on the 2nd string) is played, that D actually repaces the C (the minor third) so the chord is probably A7sus4 (which will probably work in ST3).

Thanks for the example, it helped me thinking it out loud.

Thanks for considering the custom chord idea. I thought it may impact other areas. Maybe I just need to learn the tunes well enough so I remember I have a walking F# bass over my D chord (i.e. D/F# which is how I write it with a pen. HeHe <:o)

You can override the chord detection by prepending a line containing only chords with: `

Example:
` N.C. | Bb ...

This will be highlighted as chords no matter what you write in that line
