  • Bluetooth Midi Master Volume Action

Hi there! Well done for the great job on this app! Recently I connected a midi controller (Flic 2) but there’s no option in the assigned actions to increase or decrease the master ipad audio volume (as is the first bar in settings).

I believe this would be very useful as the volume increase would be for the source and not affect each specific song individually and mess with the gain volumes of each song! Would love to see that in a future release!

Thanks in advance!

gennarakis there is a way around this if you use playlists, I agree tweaking individual song volumes live can lead to a messy workflow as it depends which song you use as a reference to where you end up with all the other songs , so this is a NO NO, I always use the master playlist volume to tweak my levels on stage remotely as this does not effect the actual song levels or other playlists and I turn up my actual device volume to maximum volume and leave it alone, to set the mixer I have my default setup sound track which is actually just a drum track recorded at full volume , I just play that at setup and turn up my playlist master to full volume, my device at full volume, then I trim the mixer input so no peak distortion is possible , then I go back to the playlist master and turn it down to reference point and away I go , this allows me to vary the volume by foot pedal substantially without ever reaching distortion in the signal path.
I also make sure all my new songs are recorded to my reference audio file so the mix is done at the start then the fine tune is done in individual songs volume in prep, then the final little tweak is done with foot pedal, this workflow if done properly should hardly need any volume tweaking on the night but there are always variables so the master playlist is the best for that.
Hope this helps those that haven’t had much sound engineering experience.
    Cheers Damir

The iPad master volume can not be remote controlled. iOS restricts access to this setting to either the volume buttons on the iPad or a special slider type that ST3 displays in the settings.

OK thanks a lot! I’m wondering then how the flic button interface and app can control the ipad master volume if it’s not allowed by apple any app to control the main volume…

Apps can control the main volume. But they need to do it with this special slider type. Maybe the Flic app uses a hidden version of this slider or another trick.

So my original question was…Can’t you assign a remote action (inside the app) to change this volume slider under the audio settings (inside the app as is done with the increase/decrease volume that changes the volume of the played song) That way the change in the slider would finally control the master volume of the ipad?

That you can do. The actions are (obviously) called "Increase Volume" and "Decrease Volume". I thought you have already tried that as they are not hard to find. They will remotely control the volume slider in the lyrics view.

EDIT: Sorry, I missed the remark about settings view. That would only work if you have the settings view open. As there is no such slider in the other views and I can't remote control a nonexistent slider.

I took another look at the documentation and Apple definitely has no officially supported way to change the system volume programmatically. Only through the slider that ST3 displayed in settings and that slider can not be remote controlled.
