  • Best Way to create Backups ?

NeilC you don't airdrop the backup file as well as all the songs. You only need to airdrop the one backup file. That's the point of a (full) backup. If your backup file is in iCloud then you don't need to use airdrop at all. Inside ST3 on your iPhone, go to settings > restore backup. Now navigate through the file system from the file selector that pops up and find your backup file saved in iCloud. In theory this is all you need to do.

If you get problems using iCloud (because it's much slower sending data over the internet and could timeout, or for some other technical reason) then you could try the airdrop method. Airdrop will send a file directly from one Apple device to another Apple device over bluetooth and wifi. The trick is knowing what to do with the file once it arrives at its destination.

I feel that Apple is maintaining iTunes on PC for compatibility reasons and expect it will be discontinued at some point. Since they removed app-syncing, it's not all that useful anymore. What we really need is an iOS file manager, which unfortunately for PC users isn't officially available. Apple doesn't allow PC users to access app folders such as Stage Traxx's directly from Windows. That's why you're using iTunes File Sharing, which is Apple made and approved.

The process in ST3 is somewhat more complicated for the less tech-savvy users as @peter has designed ST3 to work hand-in-hand with iOS Files app. On the other hand, it isn't a bad thing to learn how the Files App works, as it will give you some superpowers on you iDevice as you're used to having as a PC user. 😄 I must say that Files is quite cumbersome and frustrating for an advanced user, but it is the only way you have to do certain things. In the old days of iOS devices there wasn't any Files App, but as it's becoming more capable as a computer replacement for some users it had to get this functionality eventually.

I thought I'd just verify my procedure by backing my gig iPad and restoring to my home iPad Pro. I have about 130-songs. The process took less than 5-minues using airdrop.

I'm not set up to make any videos, but I'll give you my take on what I did.

    1. On gig iPad, go to settings and find Create Full Backup. Enter a name, eg. MyST3
    2. After it creates a backup, it asks you where to save the file. (Note that the dialog that pops up is basically the Files App.) Navigate to On My iPad > Stage Traxx 3. Tap Save.

Now you have a (large) backup: A SINGLE FILE OF EVERYTHING in the same folder that you have access to using iTunes. Copy this file out of File Sharing to back it up to PC.

    1. Open the Files App.
    2. Find the same folder: On My iPad > Stage Traxx 3
    3. You will see all your song files, but scroll until you find your backup file with extension .st3
    4. Hold down on this file. Then tap Share. A dialog pops up and the first icon is Airdrop.
    5. Make sure both iPad and iPhone have bluetooth and wifi enabled. Now tap Airdrop.
    6. It should (and it doesn't always) show your iPhone. Reboot both devices if nothing comes up. Tap your iPhone name to start sending.
    7. The backup is sent through the air relatively quickly to your iPhone. As soon as it's done it asks you what do to with the file. Tap on the option to send to Stage Traxx 3.
    8. Now your backup file is saved in the On My iPhone > Stage Traxx 3 folder
    9. Now on iPhone, open the ST3 app and go to settings > restore.
    10. Located the folder On My iPhone > Stage Traxx 3, and find the MyST3.st3 file or whatever you called it. Tap that. Follow remaining prompts and YOU'RE DONE!

    Almost.

    1. Be careful with this step: Using Files App on each device, hold down on the backup file ONLY and delete it. Don't delete your song files!! Do your iPhone first to see that you've done it right. Why? Because it's going to waste a lot of space, and you'll probably forget that it's there, and when you do this again and again you'll run out of space quickly. Alternatively, if you gave it a meaningful name and remember that you have it then you could leave it there, but delete older backups that aren't used. Note however that if you delete ST3 App, this On My iDevice > Stage Traxx 3 folder gets deleted too which will delete your local backups too.

I don't find it very useful to leave a backup in the ST3 Folder. It's not really a true backup but more of a dump.

    NeilC hi Neil,
    Explanation.
ST3 has a folder on iPad in FOLDER, ON THIS IPAD, STAGE TRAXX 3.
All your imported files reside there, and yes you can copy and paste all those files in and out of this folder.
But ST3 has a full backup feature that packs absolutely everything in settings , once you create a full backup all your songs and database is within this file. This file is normally saved within the ST3 folder, so once you create this file go in to the ST3 folder find this file, and the easiest way to find it have your filter options set on DATE and LIST this will show you the full backup file on the top of the list, now long press it click SHARE, AIRDROP it now to your IPHONE 12 , when you get a prompt on iPhone choose ST3 folder on iPhone and save.
Open ST3 on iPhone go to settings and choose RESTORE BACKUP choose the full backup you saved in ST3 folder and now you will have an identical ST3 setup on both devices , your ST3 folder will contain exactly the same files in iPhone as your iPad now you can copy and paste these files if you need to edit them etc.
Danger with this system if you have two devices running differently and you are happy with this, but you need only some songs transferred then it’s better to create a folder put all needed files in this folder transfer this folder using AIRDROP but don’t place it in to ST3 folder as ST3 doesn’t deal with folders, just transfer this folder to DOWNLOADS on your new device, then select all files within this folder and move them to ST3 folder, then refresh your SONG list and now you have your selected songs on the new device without changing its operational preferences.
I know it’s awkward but I found AIRDROP doesn't like transferring multiple files, but it seems to work if it has 1 folder file with numerous files within it.
Hope this explains how ST3 manipulates data.
    Cheers Damir

MasterAnt Hi Ant, thank you so much for this information. I’m currently trying to upload my master back up from ST3 to DropBox.
      806 files of backing tracks.
      I have a big library 📚😃

It’s gets so far half way then I get a failed to upload to Drop box.

Tried 3 times I have sent Peter a Email now of photo above and I did a video to show him exactly what I’m trying to do.

Ok so as you are saying above that I don’t need to import songs as well ? How do we get songs onto iPad ST3 and database? Do we still need to connect to pc
To iTunes file share as well ?

      I’m confused 😕

Thank you for your help and advice support and time.

I wish we could phone each other on here not just me and you I mean in general.

      Kind regards

      Neil C

Damir Hi Damir thank you 😊 for all this information it’s mind boggling trying to read all this I’m more of a hands on guy I get the gist of what your saying and I’ve tried to airdrop and it’s failed 😞
So has trying to back up my Back up files I did in the ST3 app to create a Back up. Naked it and it goes to iCloud, I’ve tried to move it from there to back it up to Dropbox.
I still have not got any of my music onto the iPhone 12 plus I have ST3 on there but ain’t been able to upload my songs onto it yet.

Thank you for your help and advice
This is all very complicated process I’m not a brilliant at computers I’m self taught but I’m pretty good but this is complicated to read from and try and perform.

I appreciate everyone’s help yet I’m getting very frustrated with it all.
      Kind regards

      Neil C

Damir Hi Damir, and Ant, Peter, etc I’ve just noticed after browsing in my Files Folder 📂 on iPad where all the songs are stored I have browsed through to check that they are music files.
Look I’ve noticed that it’s got JPEG photo album covers in there ? Would this stop a back up ?

I attach photos below 👇 files to large to upload
They are only photos yet I can’t upload them to show you guys.

Just curious to know if this would stop files being moved smoothly.

        Kind regards

        Neil

As you see I’m in the correct place 😃

          Look at this guys ?
Should this be in the this folder On My iPad ?

          Photo below.

You have album art pictures because you dragged them into iTunes File Sharing so they got copied into that folder.
They should not cause any harm, nor cause an errors uploading to dropbox.

**** Forget about using dropbox for now.

You want to 1. Make a backup from INSIDE the ST3 program, which makes one separate file containing all songs and settings.

            1. Transfer that backup file using iCloud or Airplay to iPhone. **** Forget about iTunes, dropbox for all of this.
            2. Restore the backup onto your iPhone from within ST3. This will unpack the backup file and recreate all the songs in the ST3 folder on the iPhone.

Follow my exact steps in the earlier post. My procedure works and is complete for what you're trying to do. Forget Dropbox for now.

There's not much more we can say. Perhaps you need a video, but you won't get one today. But I think you are complicating things by thinking you need the PC, iTunes, or Dropbox for this process.

NeilC That file ST3 Sun 3 April 2022.st3 is a backup file! Exactly what you want to send over to your iPhone. That is what is made when you create a backup. The only thing wrong with it is that you made it on 3 April, so it doesn't contain the changes you made since 3rd April. Delete it and make a new backup.

NeilC forget icloud and dropbox itunes, music, throw them out the window and just concentrate on things that work reliably and simply, well as simply as possible till this date.
Seems like developers are struggling to keep up with customers needs.
They can not seem to create something simple and reliable the two words are not in their vocabulary.
              🤪

NeilC ST3 folder should only have ST3 files if you have contaminated it with unknown files this is probably causing an issue, move all those files that don’t belong to the appropriate place, then follow the full backup procedure and then transfer this file to your other devices to update them.
Read the instructions slowly, understand them, then step by step you will get there once you’ve done it it will all come clear and faster.
But don’t contaminate your ST3 folder because making full backups might not work.

MasterAnt Good morning Any thank you for your help and support yes I will take it step by step
Thank you for all the advice and help.

Damir Good Morning Damir, thank you for advice yes so it’s ok to delete the MPEG or JPEG images that are in the ST3 Folder ?
It won’t remove files etc ?

Thank you for your help and support mate
Truly appreciate everyone of you helping me.

All very good advice so far. I really don't have much to add. Except that maybe I should do a backup and restore video to explain it hands on how to do it.

I concur, stay away from Dropbox. Their Files integration is absolutely horrible. If you really want to stick with Dropbox, use their app to upload / download files. You can use the Share dialogue to send files to Dropbox or Share files in the Dropbox app with Stage Traxx.

Regarding pictures: They will not interfere with ST3 but are absolutely useless. Just delete them (after creating a backup).

The file with the ST3 icon from your last screenshot, that's the backup file. And this is the only file you need to store safely or transfer to another device.

peter Hi Peter thank you so much for your input and advice and all guys here are so helpful and supportive I truly appreciate all of your help.

So going forward create back up first ✨
Then delete all existing ones ✨✨

Then where can I keep all my back ups besides on laptop will iCloud be ok?
Contact drop box cancel my subscription ✨✨✨😃

                  Kind regards

                  Neil

iCloud is certainly a viable option. The 50GB plan for 1$ per month would allow you to store 5 full backups of yours. That should be more than enough. The main downside is that you will need to transfer quite a bit of data to the internet and that might take lots of time.

The other option is to store it on your computer and some usb drives. Did you know, that you can connect USB sticks directly to your iPad and copy files to/from the sticks with the Files app? Not every stick works but this could be the cheapest option. Buy a couple of 64GB or 128GB sticks and that's about it.
