  • Problems/crashes importing files from Dropbox

Hi please can anyone help with this?

I think this might be a Dropbox iOS issue rather than an app issue but I find that when I try to import files (wavs or mp3's) into a multitrack song, the first few files import OK but then the next one will just hang, nothing happens, and it either freezes up the screen or eventually the app just closes. If I try to access Dropbox from the files app, it's hung up in there too (nothing happens when I access Dropbox). If I restart Stage Traxx and try again, Dropbox is still hung up. I have to restart the app a few times before it starts working again. Have tried reinstalling Dropbox and Stage Traxx, no difference. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to try and improve the situation? Am using an iPad mini (5th gen), iOS 15, latest version of ST and Dropbox .

Could you try to first download all the files to the iPad using the Files app? Once downloaded the import into Stage Traxx should work fine.

Hi Peter, I've just tried downloading all the files via the Files app first, then creating a new multitrack song...I can browse to the file in Dropbox, I see it's already downloaded, but when I select it..nothing happens. I can click the 'previous' button to go to the previous folder, if I try to go into the same folder again, nothing happens, or, I just get a 'loading' indicator that sits there for a few minutes then kills the app (StageTraxx exits unexpectedly).

Again, I'm more inclined to think this is a Dropbox/Files integration issue than StageTraxx..but if you have any other ideas I'd be most grateful!

In that case, my hands are tied. Stage Traxx only uses the Files app directly. All other file hoster like Dropbox integrate into the Files app. The advantage is that I don't need to implement hoster specific APIs into the app. The downside is that I have no way to analyze issues like this as all the magic is happening outside of Stage Traxx.

I myself only use Airdrop to transfer files into Stage Traxx. But that requires macOS.

peter Have been doing a bit more experimentation...if I browse, access, download Dropbox files from within the Files app directly, I don't see any issues, I can't get it to hang up....it's only when I've launched the Files app from the Stage Traxx multitrack song window that it seems to have problems

I double checked the file import dialog and I don't see any obvious bug. File imports from other sources also work fine. How many files do you need to import to see problems?

In my tests Dropbox files could be imported just fine. Maybe I did not import enough files?

The problems are also inconsistent unfortunately.

For example I've just restarted my iPad, gone into Files, Dropbox, downloaded the file I want (ie. clicked on the little cloud icon to get it to download locally). Opened StageTraxx, created a new multitrack file, tried to add the file in the multitrack setup via the Files browser, but as soon as I clicked the file StageTraxx closed unexpectedly. Reopened StageTraxx, had a look at my multitrack song...and the file is listed in the multitrack setup screen. So the import worked...but crashed StageTraxx.

These are large wavs (40MB), 16bit, 44.1KHz. I have a large amount of files and folders in my Dropbox, and quite a few levels of nested folders...not sure if any of that makes a difference?

And just to add...tried to add a second file to the song, the Files app opened, I clicked the file I wanted (one that I've already downloaded from Dropbox with the Files app outside of StageTraxx)...nothing happens. The file is highlighted momentarily when I select it but nothing else happens. I click 'previous' to go back to the previous folder...and nothing shows up other than 'loading'. I can click 'browse' at the top to go back to the Files 'locations' screen, if I click 'Dropbox', nothing happens. If I wait a few minutes the Dropbox browser window eventually comes back, but if I try to browse to my desired folder (or any other folder on the same level, in the same folder), nothing happens when I click the folder name. It's as if the Files app (and/or Dropbox) gets itself into some weird hung up state.

If I download the files to my ipad from the Dropbox webpage (rather than trying to use the the Dropbox app or the Files app), the files come down into the 'downloads' folder and then I can import them into StageTraxx. That works just fine...I'll just do that from now on!

Hi Peter, have sent the crash log corresponding to the crash I mentioned in post 7, hope it helps!

I discovered the 'export' option in the Dropbox app which lets me download to whatever location I want on the iPad (it was hiding under the 'share' option on the '...' menu next to each file which I didn't realise, I'm used to seeing the 'export' option as a separate '...' menu item as it is with the Android app, I'll just export the files to a folder using the app then import into StageTraxx, and avoid the Files app completely from now on!

Thanks, I got the crash log. I will take a look at it tomorrow.

Could it be related to the same issue I see with the desktop app? if I try to add a large amount at the one time then the import fails with an error and the subsequent files from where it errored, all have a time of 0 minutes 0 seconds. the way I got round it was to limit my adding to 100 at a time max. I used to have the same issue with the mobile app when I added the songs to the iPad top level, then tried to import them into stagetraxx causing it to crash, until I discovered the easiest way to add songs was to simply on osx, connect the iPad to the computer and drag and drop songs onto the stagetraxx folder in finder, then on the app pull down the songs list to refresh it.
