Full Backup Space Error

When I attempt a Full Backup ver 4.9 I get this error:-

Unresolved error Stage_Traxx_4.BackupManager.BackupError.insufficientDiskSpace(required: 32629766510, available: 32462750848), [:]

I know this is because it's trying to save the backup to a drive with not enough space.

If I try to save a db only backup it gives me the option of selecting a folder.

With a full back up it's checking the size of whatever folder it's pointing at and erroring. It doesn't get to the screen where it allows me to select a folder.

I'm on a mac mini with Tahoe 26.2

I also can't find anywhere it allows me to change the target folder.

Can you help?

SouthsideJimmy It sounds like you don’t have enough disk space to do a full backup , this is a very common problem.
Solution
Clean up your device and create at least double the full backup size required.
Get rid of any hidden full backups you might already have , but make sure you have a good current full backup somewhere.

Just on this specific point, I think Peter has mentioned that due to the way Apple app sandboxing works, the backup has to be 'created' in the local app folder which is why it throws the insufficient disk space error before presenting a Save As file location. You can't create the backup on an external USB drive that has plenty of free space for this reason. There has to be sufficient free space on the same local drive that the app is located on to create the backup and then once that is successful, it will present the File Save dialog that will allow you to save it off to another connected drive.

This is not a bug. You need to have enough space on your local drive to create the backup file. Only when the file has been created within the Stage Traxx folder on your local drive, only then can it be moved to an external drive. Therefore the app will always query the available space of your local drive before creating a backup. No use trying to create a backup file if there is not enough space available.

The target folder can only be selected, after the file has been created. The backup will then be moved (and possibly renamed) to the target folder.

I took another dive into Apples documentation and maybe there is a way to write a file directly into a destination outside of the app folder. I will try to see if that works.

peter Thanks Peter. I had to clear out the targeted drive to do a full save. I have about 6tb free on other drives so it would seem to make sense to have the option to select available.

Interestingly, as soon as it creates the backup it then gives me the option of selecting where I want to save it.

Is there possibly some working area where a temp backup is created that is failing the available space test?

OK, it required more changes than I expected but it is possible to write directly to an external drive. It also required some workflow changes. I needed to show a dedicated sheet to enter a name and a folder where to store the backup. But in version 4.0.10 it will be possible to write directly to a usb drive and work around limited internal space.
