iPad randomly not connecting to usb interface, only rebooting desk helps

I don’t think this is an issue with st3 or st4. I think iOS just fails to realise it’s connected to a 18 ch desk at times. I’ve had a long afternoon of testing and editing st4, I wanted to check my work, so I power up the desk and plug a usb cable in to a camera port on my 9th gen pad. I press play and instantly hear audio from the pad, I try 3 different usb cables, swear a lot…hard boot the pad and no connection still to the desk( this is why I think it’s iOS not ST) then finally just power off/ on the desk and bang perfect.

This is fine on the dining table but a real drag at a gig where you have to move through the crowd power off PA and signal to someone on stage if you have someone, to power off the desk etc.

Is there any setting in iOS where you can force the handshake maybe ??. Or something you could do in future that indicates that you have/ don’t have a connection to avoid the embarrassment of introducing a song and pressing play to get silence which has happened a lot with my old duff x air.

Kevtyler Yep, I sometimes get the same connecting my iPad to my Behringer X32.

Exactly what @jaytrax said above.
It all relates to the way USB performs detection and so following the above connection sequence provides the 'ideal' scenario for reliable detection.
That's not to say you can't do things in a different order, but it does (from experience) increase the likelihood of the iPad not seeing your audio interface.

This isn’t a Stage Traxx issue
Power on the desk first, connect lest to iPad and then to USB on the XAIR

It’s a sequence that needs to be followed
If the USB doesn’t see the iPad a reboot is needed an even toggling Analogue to USB and back won’t fix the issue

So mixer on
Connect to iPad first
Connect to XAIR

It could also be a faulty cable. Did you try different cables?

Hi guys, can I speak to you all with one post.

I opened by saying it’s not an st issue.

What you guys are saying is exactly what I did, ok so sometimes the desk or the pad sees the plug first but I’m going to argue it makes no difference. The desk was powered on then the pad was connected.

Yes as I said I tried multiple cables before powering off the desk again, all the cables are fine.

I’ve had this issue before when I was using a windows tablet rather than a pad, but with a computer, behringers audio app gives you a visualisation that you are connected, and this is what I’m requesting from Peter,

Obviously you can’t just unpower the desk at a gig, without turning down your active speakers or amp rack, and I find when you are setting up in the dark, it’s easy to wiggle the usb on the back of your desk…sometimes you will get an instant reconnection, other times a power off is required.

I was hoping there might be a way to force the handshake but I’ve never come across it before.

The handshake is done on the operating system level and is handled somewhere in the OS kernel way outside of any apps reach. ST only gets notified about a connection change when the handshake has already completed. There is no way to force a new handshake from an app.

It’s just like so many things in a musos life, your standing on stage, the DJ announces you, and you press play and nothing happens, it would be nice to know if the usb connection has dropped, but I realise you have so much on your plate and I’ll say no more.
