CQ18T - Midi Format

Currently gigging with Ipad Air running ST3 and connecting via interface to provide USB connection to both Behringer Flow 8 digital mixer and PodGo guitar pedal. The music tracks play out of the headphone socket to two channels on the flow 8 (sounds better). Everything is fully automated in the lyrics with midi commands to select patch and snapshots on the PodGo and to switch on and off the reverb on the Flow 8 at the start and end of every song. Works flawlessly. I've got certain tracks programmed to adjust the volume of lead vocal track on the mixer when the singer is blowing his mouth organ and return to normal level, all done with midi messages in the lyrics of ST3. We both love to roam the room while playing and running back to the stage to press a button or footswitch is not an option any more.

However, I've bought and Allen and Heath CQ18T digital desk with a view to replace the flow 8 but I cannot for the life of me work out the format and CC commands that are required to switch on and off the reverb on the CQ18T and replicate what I can do with the flow 8. Using midi learn does return a very long string of CC messages that do actually work, well sort of but not at all reliably (same string of midi code for on and off?)and nothing that works at all in the actions settings in SYSTEM of ST3. The midi implementation chart for the CQ is completely mind blowing and nothing like as easy as any other gear I've ever used in 30 odd years. Has anyone here had any experience of this or able to help please? The answer, theoretically should be very simple CC message for FX, DCA, Mute group on and off.

Me too! I have the reverb on/off for my Persons 16.0.2 embedded in all my StageTraxx songs. It's going to be a big enough pain replacing all those as it is. If anyone understands the CQ18t CC format please shout!

I think I have it sussed. The manual is the least user friendly ever.

To mute FX1 - B0 63 00 B0 62 51 B0 06 00 B0 26 01

So let's break that down.

B0 - that just means Midi Channel 1
63 - It's always 63. Doesn't matter why for our purposes
00 - first part of the address of the thing you're trying to mute (in the mute table further down the PDF)
B0 - Midi Channel 1
62 - It's always 62
51 - second part of the address. FX1 is 00 and 51
B0 - Midi channel 1
06 - This doesn't matter for mute - it's for other midi functions. just leave it as 06
00 - again this doesn't matter for mute
B0 - Midi Ch 1
26 - It's always 26
01 - Just means toggle on.

Not sure if you can send the same message to toggle off or if you need the last two digits to be 00. Should take 5 minutes to test.

Going to buy one of these babies tomorrow. Got a bout of GAS :-)

I've just bought one of these and the midi command format is strange.

For example (if I read the manual correctly) the command to mute the first FX1 channel is
B0 63 00 B0 62 51 B0 06 00 B0 26 01

There is none of the CCnn.n@1 type of commands.

Have you come across this format before and can Stage Traxx 3 handle sending them?

Spoke too soon. If this is the format and the right data - nothing happens when I add it to Stage Traxx either in the send midi command in settings or embedded in the song.

That's hexadecimal midi representation. To be honest this is the worst way imaginable to describe how to control a device over midi. This is the raw data that is sent between devices. B0 is a CC on channel 1. 63 is the hexadecimal representation for the value 99. So B0 63 00 would be a CC99.0@1 in Stage Traxx.

You are mistaken in that every value is hexadecimal. And B0 is not just midi channel 1 but a control change on midi channel 1.

Yes. You're probably right. The CQ18 midi manual is pretty opaque to someone like me that's been using simple midi for a few decades.

What I need to know is how to get my StageTraxx 3 to unmute a CQ18T FX channel on play and mute it again on stop using midi.

Can you advise please?

Hi Peter

Sorry I responded to you on a separate chain. CC99.0@1 is what StageTraxx records when I put it in learn mode. When I play it back however it doesn't mute the track.

I think that the message needs three values. The 00 and 51 designate the track (from the CQ manual) and something else to tell it to mute.

I don't know how to make StageTraxx do that.

I've had an "interresting" situation recently; I've used to send audio from my ipad using ST3 to my A&H via Usb-C. A digital hardwiering that has been working flawlessly for some time now.

After putting in midi code to my lyrics to change presets and scenes on my Quad Cortex, The A&H mixer is changing stuff radicall on some of my songs (only some songs though).
I guess some of the midi syntax ive put into the lyrics for the quad cortex are getting picked up by the mixer and making changes which is 100% out of my control as for now!

Ive looked through the menu of the A&H CQ18t for turning midi off completely because i dont need it, but i cant even find midi mentioned anywhere.

On my last gig i had to send audio via the bluetooth on the mixer not to mess out my mixer setting during the gig. Bummer!

Does anyone know how to disable midi on the A&H CQ18t?

No idea, but check which midi channels the CQ listens to and make sure the Quad Cortex uses other channels.

The manual says that the CQ only uses midi channel 1. So make sure you set any other midi gear to the channels 2 to 16.
