Master Volume

Hi,

Just wondering if there is a recommended place for the master volume slider to be?

It's tricky as there is no scales to reset to if it gets nudged for any reason?

And just checking that if the slider is left on full (easiest option) that the software won't unnecessarily clip?

OK, I can see now that it syncs to the outputs device, I hadn't realised this, perhaps it could be labelled 'Device Output'?

As always with volume sliders: the highest sensitivity to movement is around 0db. Here you will be able to make adjustments like +/- 0.1db. If the slider is at -20db for example you will not be able to make such fine adjustments. That's due to the logarithmic nature of volume sliders both in the analog and digital world.

Stage Traxx will not prevent clipping. If you move everything to the right, you will get distortion. There is only one slider which is recommended to be at maximum volume: the device volume. You want that at maximum to have the highest possible signal noise ratio on the digital analog converter. Although with the high quality audio output on Apple devices, this will most likely not be audible.

I"ve started all of my ST3 tracks with both the song volume and individual multitracks at '0' db's, and then have amended to suit/balance with each other.

I think the fact that there seems to be exponential increase the further you turn the volume of a devices output ties in with what you have said.

I've never been confident that clipping won't occur if one of my device's volume is on full, probably because my old analogue devices always used to clip.

But if you're confident that an iPad10 wouldn't clip with the output volume on full then I shall start cranking all the way!!

The device volume slider is adjusted for the AD converter. So it is completely safe to leave that at 100% volume as long as you have no digital distortion due to your signal processing in Stage Traxx.
