Decoste1 i had this same issue , just update all your software to the latest operating system and Latest ST3 version , this has made my problem go away and there is nothing wrong with bluetooth reliability if its working properly as long as you are operating your devices on a normal size stage, initially my devices were ok and as updates were introduced the system became absolutely useless and now that the software has been updated i have no complaints.
Yes using a router is the safest , if you dont mind draging more stuff around, some people use bluetooth to play their backing tracks which i find very dangerous , but they say its fine, so i dont see why you cant rely on it to the hosting feature, it should work just as reliably , so i believe you need to update your software to a good working combination.
