The midi action buttons on st3 beta.

I’m still struggling trying to use the new action buttons on st3 beta with the audio dmx sequencer on my laptop. I’m trying to send an instruction to nudge up the volume of a channel on my x air desk.

On midi action button 1 on st3 beta I have assigned this [midi @N60@13]

The midi monitor on my pc software sees it as a note on ch 13 at velocity 127, I have assigned a manual sequence on the pc to respond to this command but it’s not responding, the bloke who wrote the software suggests that it’s waiting to see the note off info before it reacts.

Is it possible to have one command on an st3 button that contains the note, the channel and note on and note off information in one instruction.

Like this.
I can’t try it as I’m out of the house right now without my gear.

I would recommend you use the learn functionality.

Your syntax is wrong. The midi tag is only needed in lyrics. In settings you write the commands directly without a tag.

So the correct syntax is this if you want to send a note 60 on velocity 127 on channel 13: N60@13

Can I send note on and note off in the same string of characters.

I want the laptop to see for example. Ch 13 note 66 velocity 127 then note 66 velocity 0

I’m useless with this stuff, is that possible.

I can’t use learn as I don’t have Bluetooth midi. I use rtp midi on my laptop which sees midi from iOS over wi fi. I was going to suggest in future releases the addition of midi reception over Wi-Fi, but I don’t want to be ungrateful for what we have.

Yes: N60@13,N60.0@13

Technically this is a second note on with velocity 0 which is usually interpreted as a note off. ST3 can not send en explicit note off.

How many instructions can I add to an action button, is it just program change plus channel and bank or could I add a more complex command. I’m new to this midi thing sorry.

I hope you are well, I’ve been testing the midi action buttons on st3 beta again.

The creator of Showmagic suggested that sequences won’t trigger from a note on command without seeing that note go off. I set up a single action button with note on/off data hoping I could achieve this with a single push, and although my midi monitors see note on and note off, the software only responds when note off info from another action button is pressed alternatively. I’ve found some data I don’t understand and have copied the data that I receive from bome midi translator.

And here’s the data I receive when I push button 1 then button 2 and then repeat.

As you see I get different data after I press action button 2

Here’s another thing I don’t understand, when I press and hold the play button on st3, no midi data is transmitted until I release it, however if I press and hold the action buttons, they send data and continue to send data untill released. Could this by why my software is unresponsive to a single button and why I need to press play/stop on st3 4 times in order to get my software to see the prg change number that triggers it.

OK, so first get rid of the Brackets. Just paste the commands like I wrote at the top of this page. Seems like ST3 ignores them but I would not count on that to stay that way. Just write the midi commands without any brackets around them.

Then: Action buttons keep firing when you keep them depressed. All other buttons only fire when you release them. That's how I intended them to work.

Your dump is hard to read. What does touchosc and XR18 MIDI OUT mean?

I guess the problem is that the app you want to control expects a note on, then a dely and then a note off. That's not possible to do in ST3. It will send note on immediately followed by not off or as you programmed your action 1 it will first send the note off and then note on.

I’m sorry, I thought all the info had to be in brackets, I was just surprised how the info changed after pressing the other action button. I don’t understand why it’s 4 lines then 6 lines of info, or what that
BO 64 04 ETC is about

This is my set up, iOS sends midi to my pc via my personal on stage wireless network, it’s picked up by rtp midi, then bome midi translator does it’s thing and sends the info to and from Showmagic and my digital desk Xr 18. So touch osc and x 18 are the names that bome applies. I’m away for the weekend now so can’t do much for a few days. I’ll be back in touch soon.

I’m going to accept defeat on this midi button thing. I got rid of the brackets and it made no difference. I’m receiving data from st3 on ports that are switched off, so I’ve definitely got more to figure out apart from the way my pc interacts with st3 midi sent over wi fi and shared with my digital desk etc etc.

So I’ll leave this here and thank you for your help at this point, I’m going to use an old iPhone to nudge volume on my desk up and down when I’m using st3.
